“The ancestor to every action is a thought.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Pretty powerful line. There’s really a lot in it. On one level, it really speaks to how character is developed. I remember hearing this one years ago: "Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny." Emerson’s line seems to be along that line.
From the strategic perspective it has a cool additional meaning. If you’re thinking strategically it will not just be a thought. It will be thinking that develops not only what to do but how to do what you’re thinking of doing…measures along the way to make sure you’re still on the path, goals to reach for, with objectives. And it could all come from a single captured thought.
Or…it could just be a thought that leads to a haphazard action.
By the way, I saw the quote today over on Valeria Maltoni’s blog in her post, are you a thinking blogger. It fell in line with some thinking I’ve been doing lately about whether StrategyCentral inspires action…or simply resonates with a kind of dissident world view that is sometimes prevalent in organizations. What do you think?
