There are two basic dangers in not moving fast enough to meet the changing needs of your customers, or keeping up with the changing capabilities of your competitors.  The The Prepared Mind of a Leader refers to the first danger as active inertia.  The second danger is even more alarming for many of us: irrelevance.  The problem for many of us is that we’re not sensing how quickly the culture is changing and how wide the gap is becoming.  Think about the implications in this quote: "if you change your organization more slowly than the industry changes, you are in danger of becoming irrelevant."  You may want to quibble about what change is acceptable and what is compromise, but at the end of the day I can show you hundreds of organizations that are only relevant to the people already on the inside.

The Danger of Irrelevance
